Gahagan Calendar

We have concluded The 2011 calendar of events at Gahagan and closed the cabin for the winter. The 2012 calendar should be available in April. A few 2012 dates are known and shown below.

Marguerite Gahagan Nature Preserve has numerous events during the year. These include public education programs, environmental field trips for the area schools, nature presentations by noted speakers, AuSable River water quality monitoring field days and participation in other area events.

The Visiting Naturalist - February - April
Our environmental educator comes to our area schools with special programs about life in our natural world. Teachers, watch for the sign up period starting in January.

Gahagan Preserve and Cabin Clean-up - April 21
Held each year to spruce-up the cabin and grounds for the season. The spring school field trips start soon after week. 9 AM at cabin

Gahagan Preserve Walk - May 18
Join our environmental educator, Tom Dale, as he leads you through the preserve discussing its varied natural features. A great chance to discover new things and have your questions answered. 5 PM at cabin.

Gahagan Summer Bird Count - May 23 - A Gahagan Learn and Contribute Event
Each year, Jack and Joanne Bouck and Tom Dale chart the bird varieties of our special forest. Join them as they walk quietly through the Preserve trails listening for bird songs and recording sightings of various bird species. Bring binoculars, bird field guide and bug repellent. If you know birds, you'll be a great help; if you don't, what a learning experience. If you are somewhere in between, you get the best of everything! 8 AM. at cabin.

AuSable River Water Quality Collection Day - June 2 - A Gahagan Learn and Contribute Event
Help collect insect samples for the Upper AuSable Watershed Monitoring program. Meet at the Kirtland Community College Biology Lab at 1 pm for training and organizing before we head to the river. Bring your own waders or we will provide them. No experience necessary. You can help protect the river and learn a lot! Contact Tom Dale @ 989.275.3217 or thdale@core.com. 1 PM at Biology Lab KCC.

Gahagan Summer Nature Camp - July 19-21 - Rain or Shine - Members Free; Non-Members $5
For children age 6-11, three mornings of fun with nature. Join Naturalists/Educators Tom Dale and Karen Demers to make exciting discoveries at the Preserve! Registration forms available at the CRAF Center. Mail to MGNP, P.O. Box 421, Roscommon 48653, or contact Tom Dale @ 989.275.3217 or thdale@core.com. 9 AM at cabin.

A special program to be announced. An evening designed for the whole family. 7 PM at cabin.

AuSable River Water Quality Collection Day - September 8 - A Gahagan Learn and Contribute Event
Help collect insect samples for the Upper AuSable Watershed Monitoring program. Meet at Gates Lodge, Stephan Bridge, on the AuSable River Mainstream at 10 am for organizing before we head to the sites. Bring your own waders or we will provide them. No experience necessary. You can help protect the river and learn a lot! Coordinated with the annual river sysem clean-up, there is a great burger, brat and beer feed for lunch after the work is done. Gahagan Annual Open House - September 16

Join us for a Sunday afternoon of wine in the forest and good conversation as we recapture some of the history of Gahagan Preserve and recognize important contributors from the past. Details to follow. 2-5 PM at the cabin.
